John Ferneley, Snr
(1782 – 1860)
Mertonia
Oil on canvas
87 x 108 cm
Acc. No: 1617
Condition: The painting had been lined and the original tacking margins had been removed. The painting was selected for conservation treatment as a thick-yellowed varnish discoloured the whole painting. The overall condition of the paint layer was sound. Dirt was caught between the canvas and the stretcher bar.
Treatment: Removal of surface dirt and varnish was removed with the appropriate reagent and solvent following tests. Dirt was removed from between the canvas and the stretcher bar and the back of the canvas and stretcher were cleaned. A brush conservation varnish was applied. Retouching was carried out in the areas of the drying cracks using restoration colours and a final varnish applied. The frame was cleaned and the painting was secured using brass plates.
